I ran into this photographic monopoly of bookshelves to represent libraries when I was doing my post updating library use figures. I used the photo I did because it at least showed computers in a library — the name of the photo is “Book Shelves and Computers” and it was taken at NYPL! Sure, I get it, it’s not like libraries no longer have bookshelves — well, not public libraries, anyway. But at a time when it’s electronic services that have greatly increased in variety and number — databases, streaming services for music and audiobooks as well as movies and television, ebooks of novels and nonfiction and comic books, videogames, skills courses — it verges on irresponsible to keep visually defining libraries with books.
